I Am A Tennis Super Role Model!

While it is just as much a surprise to me as it is to you, I have been named as a "super (role) model" by my friends at 4all! Here's a screen shot from the e-mail they recently sent out:

And you can check out the whole interview by clicking here: Meet Super (Role) Model Kim. You definitely need to read this interview where I finally reveal my secret for juggling work, family and staying on top of my tennis game. Hint: it involves food. Other hint: it involves not actually having a job.

My 4all interview comes just in time for May which, as WE all know, is National Tennis Month. It's also when Mother's Day falls and I think those two things are what the 4all team was interested in. In other words, when they went looking for an official "tennis mom," guess where they came? Right here! To Tennis Fixation!

So to celebrate National Tennis Month and my long overdue recognition as a leading tennis mom, I am going to have lots of giveaways throughout the month of May. And one of them will be for a fabulous piece from the 4all London collection (a collection I happen to love since its all pink, purple, black and white). The giveaways will start on Sunday, May 1, so be sure and check in on that day and throughout the month of May because you will not want to miss out on all of the great tennis items you could win during Tennis Fixation's Super Giveaway Extravaganza Month! I'm pretty sure this is the kind of thing tennis role models do.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year 2011! It's the first day of the new year and I am in very sunny Pasadena on my way to the Rose Bowl! Hopefully we will see the TCU Horned Frogs beat the (football) pants off the Wisconsin Badgers.

As I sit here in the hotel lobby, I am surrounded by Badger fans. Note to self - next Rose Bowl, don't book a room at one of the opposing teams fan hotels. I am very conspicuous in my purple t-shirt and tennis shoes. I didn't outfit myself in all of the required paraphenalia - thank God - quite yet.

Also - other note to self - don't book a hotel on the Rose Parade route. As we drove home last night from the Purple Pep Rally, I thought we had entered Hoboville. These Pasadena people actually camp out, in the COLD, to stake out a good parade viewing spot. And they have it all - barbeque grills, inflatable beds, TVs, silly string. We're pretty sure we saw someone with two computer screens doing a podcast out on the sidewalk at 11:00 p.m. A fun family tradition. I love it!

Have a great day today and check back in with Tennis Fixation as we shake off the holiday laziness and get back to helping you (and me!) play your absolute best and funnest tennis ever. Happy New Year!

Your Serve Won't Be The Only Scary Thing On Court

How do you combine tennis, fashion and a good dose of Halloween horror? Love All has figured out a super cute way to do so with these Halloween t-shirts, made for the courts.

Why am I in love with a t-shirt I can wear for about 3 hours out of the whole year? First, Love All has done an adorable job with the scary tennis theme. Just look closely at the orange and violet tees - those aren't Os in the word "Boo!" - they're tennis balls! Corny enough to be adorable!

Second, and let's get serious here, these shirts are for Halloween. I will go out of my way to support any holiday in which eating candy is one of the required activities.

Finally, these are just plain old fantastic tees. They are in a burn-out fabric with a vintage, worn-in feel. The material is 50 % cotton and 50% polyester so these tees are sheer enough to look a little sexy but strong enough to make it through the wash. The colors are bright, vibrant and lots of fun. And, most important, the fit is close and slim - very girly.

Bottom line? Love All has lots of tennis t-shirts to lust after. Buying them all may require some type of credit card "trick", but for now, "treat" yourself to one of their Halloween tees.

It's National Tennis Month!

That's right! May is National Tennis Month! So, in celebration of National Tennis Month, here's a bit of tennis trivia that I'm guessing most of you don't know.

During ATP and WTA tournaments, tennis balls are changed out after every nine games. Except for the first set of balls, which are changed out after only seven games. Why? Because those balls are are also the balls used during warm-up. See? You learn something new here at Tennis Fixation all the time!

Happy National Tennis Month!

Happy New Year from Tennis Fixation!

Happy 2010 from Tennis Fixation!

Its the beginning of a new year and its a great time to figure out where you want to take your tennis game.  And the best way to do this?  Adopt at least one tennis resolution for 2010.

Just one short year ago, I set out what I thought the Top Tennis Resolutions for 2009 were. I myself pledged to take on Resolution No. 4 - play more tennis for fun. How successful was I? I would give myself a grade of "B" on the playing tennis for fun front. While I didn't actively try to set up a bunch of play for fun matches, I never turned down anyone who asked me to come and play. This is a great resolution because it gives you a chance to play without the pressure of having to win. And, by the way, tennis is supposed to be fun so you should always be out there trying to play for fun.

So what are the best tennis resolutions to take on in 2010?  How about adopting one of these?

Resolution No. 1 - Improve your serve.  Make 2010 the year you undertake a concerted effort to get  down at least one great, dependable serve.  Maybe this means taking lessons.  Maybe this means playing a lot more matches.  Maybe this just means getting out and serving 300 balls a week.  Just do whatever it takes to get this most important stroke down.

Resolution No. 2 - Learn something about the rules of tennis.  Why not be the person people turn to when they have a question about the rules instead of the person who says "Why don't we just play a let?"  Buy a rule book - they're pretty small - and read through it.  You'll probably be upset at all the points you gave up because you just didn't know what the rule was.

Resolution No. 3 - Invest in some good gear.  Its time to quit playing in running shoes.  Its time to buy a skirt or two that fit comfortably.  Its time to have a case of balls in the garage so you always have a fresh can in your bag.  Its time to get your racquet restrung!

Resolution No. 4 - Do a better warm-up before your matches.  I talk about this one all of the time because I know I play SO MUCH BETTER when I've warmed up well before playing.  Its just so dang hard to get in that good warm-up.  Who has the time?  So, make this the year you resolve to improve your match performance by just warming up better.  For a great pre-match warm-up, click here: Winning The Warm-Up.

If you aren't happy with these, try one of the 2009 resolutions.  Just come up with something that you really want to work on for this new year.

What is my tennis resolution for 2010?  I'm finally going for No. 1 above.  This is the year I get a great serve.  And guess what?  You should adopt a different resolution because you're going along for the ride with me on this one and your serve is bound to improve right along with mine when you read all of the great tennis serve tips I'll be blogging about.  So, as always, stay tuned to Tennis Fixation.  Let me know how your game's going and what you're working on.  Happy New Year and let's have some tennis fun in 2010!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving from Tennis Fixation!

Will I be playing tennis today? Probably not. I got up this morning and did the Turkey Trot with my family. By "did" I mean I walked the 5K with my college-age daughter and 9-year-old son. Sure, I wanted to run it. But they didn't so we had some family time together by walking.

I plan on spending the rest of the day eating, watching football and thinking about the fun planned for December here at Tennis Fixation. Have a great Thanksgiving and stay tuned - you won't want to miss the holidays at Tennis Fixation!

Happy 4th of July!

We're in Grand Teton National Park for the 4th of July and - sorry, kids - no fireworks allowed! But the natural beauty is so overwhelming, I don't think we miss them much. So instead of bombs bursting in air, here's a fantastic picture of Mt. Moran (I hope) taken by my incredible husband who just keeps taking these kind of wonderful pictures, and saving our family memories, no matter how much we all complain. And this is just one of a number of typical pictures - these views are everywhere!

Tennis-wise (yes, I'm keeping up), Serena wins women's singles and then wins women's doubles with Venus - all in the same day and just like she did at the Australian Open (click HERE for more on this). This seems incredibly newsworthy to me but nobody seems to notice. I think everyone is already focusing on the Federer-Roddick battle tomorrow.

Happy 4th of July!

Santa's Tennis Gift Guide

I was shopping in my favorite tennis store today because I heard they had a huge holiday sale going on. And they did! Thirty percent off all apparel - including all new Nike, which is pretty much what I wear. But looking around, I saw so many cute tennis items that I would love to give to my tennis buddies and would by happy to receive myself. So here are my top five things "Santa" could bring me this year that I would put to good use on the court:

1. Tennis Socks - You cannot have enough socks. I think my kids wear mine. Lately, I have seen really colorful, fun tennis socks that I know they wouldn't steal from me. My favorites: sassy ankle socks with the words "Tennis Snob" in rhinestones.

2. Instructional Videos & DVDs - Hasn't everything about tennis been filmed and said already? Apparently not. There are plenty of new videos and DVDs out there and, since I am a sucker for anything I think might improve my game, I would love to have some of the new releases.

3. Tennis Books - Along the same lines as #2, there are so many new books - not all instructional. I haven't even read James Blake's autobiography yet so that would be new to me. It is definitely something I'll be looking for under my tree.

4. Tennis Bag - My first one was basic black. My second was a purple (gasp!) tote. But I now have my eye on one that's a double-racquet Pucci-inspired bag, hot pink and yellow, with lots of room for balls, water bottles, sunscreen, etc. This will give exactly the right message to opponents when I arrive on the court, especially with the rhinestone socks above (Message: This girl spends way too much money on tennis!).

5. Tennis PJs and Slippers - OK, so these won't help my game out much. But they were too cute and, if I'm thinking about tennis in my sleep, it can't hurt. Right?
