Happy Birthday Bethanie Mattek-Sands!

Today is the birthday of the third-highest ranked American woman in tennis - Bethanie Mattek-Sands. Happy Birthday Bethanie! Bethanie is ranked No. 43 in Women's Singles by the WTA and is No. 12 in Doubles.

I have been a fan of Bethanie for a while now because she is such a fun player. So, in tribute to her and in celebration of her birthday, I've collected some photos of Bethanie in some of her interesting "tennis couture." This is what she's really known for. I hope you enjoy seeing her in these outfits as much as I do.

Here is a really well-known photo of Bethanie in a gold-lame' tennis outfit. And you thought you couldn't wear gold-lame' on the court. Well, maybe you can't. And I certainly can't. But Bethanie can:

I know - you didn't wear a black gown on your wedding day and neither did I. But Bethanie did and that's why I love her! Happy Birthday Bethanie! And best of luck in this year's matches!

Follow ALL The Action With The ATP/WTA Live App

If you want to be absolutely on top of what is happening in the world of pro tennis, its easy during the Slams because each Slam has its own app. But what about the rest of the year? What about those other tournaments? Well, now there's an app for that.

I just downloaded the ATP/WTA Live app to my iTouch. (Yes, I admit it - I don't have an iPhone yet. I'm still using a Blackberry. Which i happen to like.) Right now, the BNP Paribas Open is going on in Indian Wells. And this app is feeding me the draw, the order of play, completed match scores, live scores, and live match statistics. So I can see that, at this very moment, Melanie Oudin is up 2 points in her first set tiebreaker against Elena Vesnina. I can even see that Elena just faulted on her first serve and is hitting a second. Pretty amazing!

I can also see what's happening on the Challenger Tour so I'll be able to keep up with some of those up-and-coming players I keep hearing about.

And I can check the most current ATP and WTA rankings. That's how I know that Bethanie Mattek-Sands, a player I love to follow, is currently ranked No. 43 in WTA singles, the third highest US woman behind Venus Williams (No. 8) and Serena Williams (No. 11).

US Open Series: Week 5

The countdown to the U.S. Open continues as we enter Week 5 of the Olympus U.S. Open Series. Here's what I thought was interesting last week:

Maria Kirilenko and Victoria Azarenka won in doubles at the Western & Southern Financial Group Women's Open in Cincinnati Ohio, beating doubles specialists Lisa Raymond and Rennae Stubbs. I thought that was pretty impressive since Azarenka is not known for being all that great at doubles.
Azarenka now moves into a tie for 4th place in the women's U.S. Open Series standings with Svetlana Kuznetsova and behind Maria Sharapova in 1st place, Kim Clijsters in 2nd and Agnieszka Radwanska in 3rd. Yes, that's right - Maria Sharapova is currently in 1st!
Andy Murray leads on the men's side with David Nalbandian at 2nd (!) and Roger Federer in a 3-way tie for 3rd with Mardy Fish and Sam Querrey (!!!).

What Happened To Bethanie?

Bethanie Mattek-Sands did, as I indicated in my last post, play in this week's Sony Ericsson Open. In singles, she lost in the first round to Russian Anastasia Pivovarova, 7-6 (1), 6-3. In doubles, she and her Russian partner Nadia Petrova lost in the second round to Spaniards Nuria Llagostera Vives and Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, 7-6, 6-4.

The real question for me was, of course, what has Bethanie wearing? As you can see from the above photo, she went with nothing over-the-top - pink tank and white skirt. But how about the hair? Red red red! I think blonde was a better look for Bethanie.

Who Is Bethanie Mattek-Sands?

So a recent little blurb in the Sports section caught my eye - "U.S. needs new star successors." The gist of this very small article was that, outside the Williams sisters, there are no upcoming U.S. women tennis players. To put it bluntly, "No [female] American teenager is being heralded as a future Grand Slam champion."

If you check the WTA rankings this week, there are four U.S. women in the top 100 - Serena Williams is No. 1 and Venus Williams is holding spot No. 6. The next ranked U.S. woman, coming in at No. 37, is Bethanie Mattek-Sands. Jill Craybas holds the next spot at No. 85. Jill Craybas I've heard of. But who is Bethanie Mattek-Sands?

I've never even heard of her let alone seen her play. So I thought to myself, "I'm going to track some information down on Bethanie. Maybe highlight her on my blog."

Well, the photo above comes from the WTA website's official entry on Bethanie. Sure, they give some stats. But the big news? She just got married in November 2008. Here's how the official WTA website puts it:

With a perfect sunset backdrop, Mattek wore a Romona Keveza dress and Marciano zebra print stiletto shoes. Her 5.5 carat custom engagement ring was paired with a wedding band resembling zebra stripes, 3.5 carats of black and white diamonds. The intimate wedding of just 40 guests in attendance consisted of friends and family who all dressed to the wedding's theme of black and white. The flower arrangements consisted of purple orchids, white lilies and white hydrangeas, and an ensemble of violins, drums, harp, flute and piano. The cake complimented the theme too, created with vanilla and strawberries and a layer of chocolate mousse.

I didn't realize you could get so much wedding information from the WTA! A description of the cake even! I think I've found a new addition to my Tennis Fixation favorite websites!

It appears that Bethanie is down in Miami right now, playing in the Sony Ericsson Open. I'll try to keep up with how she is doing and, of course, what she is wearing. Zebra stripes maybe?
